Proposed Wayne County Extension Site

RE: Wayne County Extension Site

Sometimes the news gets ahead of us and away from us.

As you know, we strive to announce significant news to the college family before we announce it to the general public. Last week, that didn't happen. The Democrat and Chronicle reported that Monroe Community College would have a presence in Wayne County next fall. I apologize for not sharing that news with you first.

In its article, the Democrat and Chronicle used the terms "branch campus" and "extension center" interchangeably. Clearly, they are not the same thing. We are considering establishing an extension center at Wayne Central School, just like our extension centers at Greece Apollo Middle School, Webster High School and Fairport High School.

In case you missed the article, let me fill you in on the details.

Beginning in September 2003, MCC would offer evening courses during an 11-week semester. In the first semester, all of the courses would be prerequisite-free and many of them would meet the new SUNY General Education requirements. Advanced courses might be offered in subsequent semesters for those students who wish to continue their education at the same location. The exact curriculum is still being worked out.

Our interest in northwestern Wayne County relates directly to our mission of access. When the Wayne County superintendent of schools asked us about offering courses in his district, we saw an opportunity to make our courses convenient and accessible to those residents on the northwestern end of Wayne County whose lives are already oriented toward Monroe County. We currently serve a number of Wayne County residents at our existing locations. The south, central and eastern ends of Wayne County are already well-served by Finger Lakes Community College's Newark extension center and Cayuga Community College's Auburn campus.

Tony Felicetti, associate vice president of academic services and enrollment management, is leading this initiative and can provide more details.

Again, my apologies for the miscommunication.
