TCC (Brighton): Fall Conversation #3--Facing Questions about the "Value" and Function of a College Education

Recent survey data (Wisconsin Hope Lab, 2017) highlights what many community college educators and administrators already know: community colleges are home to vulnerable populations of students. There is a renewed emphasis on community college education in the United States, but the focus of that emphasis is often on preparing students for the workforce. This conversation asks about the value and function of a liberal arts education at the community college. Given the vulnerable populations of students enrolled at America's community colleges, the specific goal of this conversation is to discover how to better integrate the benefits of the liberal arts education into the community college experience. Community colleges have been referred to as "democracy's colleges" (AACC, 2010), and therefore have an important role in making available the skillsets necessary for both individual prosperity and community stewardship.
