Julie Hutchinson Greets Attendees of Event Featuring Sen. Schumer

Julie Hutchinson (Nursing) served to greet more than two hundred attendees at the March 26 event, “The Crisis of African-American Male Unemployment,” hosted by the Urban League of Rochester and Action for a Better Community.

The event featured a keynote address by US Senator Charles Schumer and remarks by James Norman, president and CEO of Action for a Better Community, Inc., and William Clark, president and CEO of the Urban League of Rochester, NY, Inc. Hutchinson was invited to participate by the Senator’s office at the recommendation of both Norman and Clark, who Hutchinson works with as a faculty member on the Greater Rochester African American Health Coalition. She believes strongly that the economic status, just as educational status, for families of color is directly correlated with their overall health and well-being.

According to the Democrat and Chronicle, during his keynote Schumer said, “he will propose legislation in several weeks to bolster the job preparedness of black men nationwide and ease the financial crunch often created by low-paying jobs.” It is reported that nearly 25 percent of black men in Rochester are unemployed.
