Sustainability (SUS 101) Students Learn About Green Building and Sustainability in Construction

Two faculty members of MCC's Sustainability Steering Committee recently joined forces to show students in SUS 101 about sustainability in a different curriculum. Professor Laura Penman of Biology wanted her students to learn about sustainability in the buildings built at MCC. She reached out to her Civil Engineer & Project Manager colleague Professor Holly Holevinski of the Construction/Civil Technology Program on the Brighton Campus. Professor Holevinski presented on Green Building and LEED certifications. Students learned why MCC designs and constructs its structures with sustainability and renewable resources as a priority, and how the College has achieved success in this in their Construction/Renovation Projects. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the largest and most recognized green building rating system in the world managed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). This set of rating systems is used for design and construction, along with operations and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods. The programs assist building owners and operators to utilize resources to their maximum potential and to be environmentally responsible. MCC had one of the first LEED Certified buildings in Monroe County with the Wolk Building Addition. The PAC Center, Building 9 Renovation and the Building 21 Addition were also build and certified to LEED Standards. The presentation concluded with a short tour of Building 9 highlighting some of the green building initiatives incorporated into the Building 9 Renovation Project. The class stopped by the area where the LEED Certification is displayed and the green wall (which is in process of being re-established for the near future) for a picture.
