Federal Grant Supports Care for Children of MCC Students

Funding allows parents to focus on studies while their children receive care and education on campus.

MCC has been awarded nearly $293,000 from the U.S. Department of Education to support low-income student parents in their pursuit of postsecondary education by providing on-campus child care services through the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) Program.

The $292,462 grant will allow MCC to offer 33 subsidized child care slots during fall and spring semesters and three subsidized slots during summer sessions at the Guon Child Care Center. The Brighton Campus-based child care program serves the needs of MCC students and employees--including military-connected families--and the local community.

Students eligible to receive services for their children must qualify for Pell grants, which are awarded based on financial need. Without CCAMPIS funding, MCC can provide subsidized child care slots for only eight children.

The federal grant is funded for one year through September 2019, with annual awards anticipated for a total of four years.

The nationally accredited Guon Child Care Center offers early childhood care and education for children 2 months to 5 years, with a focus on preparing young children to be ready for school by age 5.
