Passing of Retiree Susan K. Cable

I am saddened to share the news that Susan Cable, retired professor of law and criminal justice, passed away on July 14, 2016.

Susan began her MCC career as instructor in the Criminal Justice Department in 1987, following seven years as an appellate attorney with the Monroe County Public Defender’s Office. During her tenure at MCC, she rose through the ranks and in 2003 was promoted to professor.

Her commitment to students and her contributions to the college were well known and widely respected. She developed comprehensive, easy-to-use study guides to assist students in understanding and retaining complex legal principles. In collaboration with other department faculty and Instructional Technologies staff, she also created a set of videos on legal procedures as resources for various criminal justice classes.

A colleague once wrote, “She is the consummate teacher. Rarely a day goes by that Sue doesn’t take the time to help a student with a personal problem. She often gives practical real-life advice to students, many times preventing them from dropping out of school from the pressure of outside problems.”

Susan retired in 2015 after 28 years of service.

Her service to the college included sitting on the Faculty Senate; participating in many college-wide committees including Middle States accreditation; and serving on various departmental committees.

Her community involvement included membership in the Monroe County Bar Association, Greater Rochester Association for Women Attorneys, New York State Bar Association and New York State Defenders Association. She also served for many years on the advisory board of the Center for Dispute Settlement’s Victim Offender Reconciliation Project.

Susan earned her juris doctor degree in 1980 and a bachelor’s degree in 1974, both from Indiana University at Bloomington.

Susan is survived by her husband of 34 years, Donald Tubman; children Seth and Stephanie; mother, Esther Cable; and three brothers.

Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. August 6 at Union Presbyterian Church, 5 Browns Ave., Scottsville, NY.

Contributions may be made in Susan’s honor to the Sarcoma Foundation of America (www.curesarcoma.org) or the Daryl Pierson Memorial Scholarship at MCC. Donations to the scholarship fund may be made by check to the MCC Foundation, 228 East Main Street, Rochester, NY 14604.
