Subject:        Fire Alarm Evacuation

During the past week fire drills were conducted at the Brighton Campus and at the Applied Technologies Center. The Damon City Campus fire drills will be conducted within the next few weeks. Over all, the fire drills ran smoothly. A few concerns were brought to our attention from the fire drills.

Please remember that we need to not only exit the building, but assemble in a safe location. There was congestion at the front ramp and in both courtyards. Faculty and staff should try to lead by example and direct everyone to move towards the front flag area and the parking lots in the rear of campus. This will allow not only free egress but also access for emergency apparatus.

Another concern is how we help students with physical disabilities during evacuations.  Please review the policy below and be familiar with it.  Take a moment to discuss this with your students as well.

Emergency Assembly Areas provide an area of temporary refuge for people with disabilities during an emergency or evacuation process.  These areas are generally located near or at a stair tower.  A blue sign inscribed with white lettering, “Emergency Assembly Area,” identifies each Emergency Assembly Area.  People with physical disabilities will gather at the following locations:

Building #1:
1.      Second floor, west side, next to stairwell, overlooking the Bus Loop
2.      Next to 1-300

Building #2:
1.      Plaza Level, Library Lobby, West Side
2.      Opposite 2-296
3.      Opposite 2-320
4.      Opposite 2-496

Building #5:

2.      Next to 5-222
3.      Opposite 5-302
4.      Next to 5-322
5.      Opposite 5-402
6.      Next to 5-422
7.      Next to 5-502
8.      Next to 5-524

Building #6:
1.      Next to elevator 6-492A (Do Not Use Elevator)

Building #8:
2.      Next to 8-202
3.      Next to 8-222
4.      Next to 8-302
5.      Next to 8-322
6.      Next to 8-402
7.      Next to 8-424
8.      Next to 8-502
9.      Next to 8-524
10.     Next to 8-602
11.     Next to 8-624

Building #11:

Public Safety will check these areas and if required they will ensure the student is moved to a safe location.  Thank you in advance for your continued support.  If you should have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at ext. 3150.
