MCC Spring 2016 Events Listing


MCC will host the following upcoming events during the remainder of the Spring 2016 semester. Upcoming events include guest speakers, musical and theatrical performances, art exhibitions and more. Most of the events are free and open to the public.

A Conversation with Salva Dut and Linda Sue Park
Noon Friday, March 18.

Water for South Sudan founder and MCC alumnus Salva Dut and author Linda Sue Park return to MCC to tell the story behind Park’s award-winning book, A Long Walk to Water, and share the current story of the Lost Boys who returned to South Sudan to drill wells and help build the world’s newest country. Presented by the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project and Water for South Sudan.

High-tech Exploration Night

Representatives from area colleges and businesses will share information on educational and career opportunities in precision machining, optics manufacturing, electronics, mechanical engineering, and computer information technology. Visiting Playwright John Cariani
7 p.m. Thursday, March 24

Actor and playwright John Cariani has appeared on and off Broadway and in several films and television shows. As a playwright, he is best known for his first play, Almost, Maine, which premiered at Portland Stage Company in 2004 and has since become one of the most frequently produced plays in the United States. Almost, Maine will be performed at MCC in April.

A native of New Orleans, award-winning writer Sheryl St. Germain directs a graduate degree program in creative writing at Chatham University where she also teaches poetry and creative nonfiction. Her poetry books include Going Home, The Mask of Medusa, and Let it Be a Dark Roux: New and Selected Poems. Her most recent book, Navigating Disaster: Sixteen Essays of Love and a Poem of Despair, was released in September 2012.

Award-winning local artist, Lawrence “Judd” Williams taught painting, printmaking, sculpture and figure drawing at Rochester Institute of Rochester. Drawing and Sculpture features large format graphite drawings and sculpture made from found and familiar objects.

Almost, Maine by John Cariani premiered at Portland Stage Company in 2004 and opened off-Broadway in 2006. It has since become one of the most frequently produced plays in the United States and has been translated into a dozen languages.

Wes Moore is a youth advocate, U.S. Army combat veteran, social entrepreneur, and host of Beyond Belief on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Moore will talk about his book, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates.

MCC’s Scholars’ Day is a showcase for academic excellence -- an entire day devoted to promoting scholarship across disciplines. The event includes presentations, panel discussions, performances and poster sessions by MCC faculty, students and staff.

Neuroscientist and best-selling author David Eagleman is a daring young scientist who provides a new understanding of our brains—and ourselves. He is the writer and host of the PBS series The Brain with David Eagleman. His presentation is the culmination of MCC’s Scholars’ Day 2016 and is made possible by MCC with generous support from the ESL Charitable Foundation and Xerox Foundation.

26th annual Yom HaShoah Commemoration
9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28
R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center, MCC’s Brighton Campus. Free and open to the public.
Commemoration includes an opening ceremony and candle lighting, reading of the names of Holocaust survivors, and Holocaust survivor testimonies. Hosted by the Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project.

2nd annual Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Competition MCC-SUNY TYESA
10 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, April 29.
PAC Center, MCC Brighton Campus. Free and open to the public.
Teams of sophomore and freshman students from two- and four-year colleges and universities compete to determine who has designed, built, and piloted the best mini unmanned aerial vehicle through an obstacle course. Presented in partnership with the Two-Year Engineering Science Association of New York State (SUNY TYESA).

MCC Foundation’s 18th annual Gold Star Gala: Curiouser & Curiouser presented by M&T Bank
