2011 Sports Hall of Fame inductees announced

The Monroe Community College athletics department has announced the 2011 Sports Hall of Fame Class.  Being enshrined this year are hockey player Jake Wiemer (Class of 2006), baseball player Bob Hurlbutt (Class of 1989), and women’s soccer player Wendy Kotwas-Waddell (Class of 1999).

Wiemer starred for the MCC ice hockey team, earning first team All-American accolades in 2004 and second team honors in 2006.  He is among the team’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and points.  He helped lead the Tribunes to a record 38-13-1 and a pair of national semifinal appearances in his two years.

One of the preeminent power hitters in MCC baseball history, Hurlbutt helped guide the Tribunes to a trip to the Junior College World Series in 1989.  A two-time first team All-region performer and 1989 second team All-American, Hurlbutt’s 17 home runs are second all-time in the program’s history.  He was selected by the Houston Astros in the 1988 Major League Baseball amateur draft and spent three years playing in the team’s farm system.

One of just a few two-time first team NJCAA All-Americans in MCC sports history, Kotwas-Waddell was a prolific scorer for the Tribune women’s soccer team.  She finished her career with a program-most 58 goals, including a single-season record of 35 in 1998.  She totaled 89 points that season, which is another MCC mark.  Kotwas-Waddell later starred at Virginia Tech and has coached the W-League Virginia Beach Piranhas.

The induction ceremony will be held Friday evening, Sept. 23 in the Warshof Conference Center at the R. Thomas Flynn Campus Center on MCC’s Brighton Campus.  It will be held in conjunction with the college’s Alumni Week and Homecoming activities.  For more information, please call 292-2830.
