Articles Highlight MCC's Efforts in Tackling Food Insecurity

Food insecurity is a huge concern locally and nationally, and the news media are drawing attention to actions being taken to alleviate hunger.

  • MCC's DWIGHT (Doing What is Good & Healthy Together) program is highlighted on the front page of the Rochester Business Journal's March 23 issue. Staff members Kim DeLardge, Peggy Harvey-Lee and Betty Stewart spoke about MCC's new partnership with FoodLink that makes it possible for the Downtown Campus to offer the DWIGHT program and for the Brighton Campus to expand existing services to better meet students' needs. The article also quoted Denise Calarco in Parking Services, who noted the success of the annual Food for Fines campaign she leads. Many thanks to Dana Voldan-Curry for finding a student to provide a personal perspective for the article.

(Please know that a copy of RBJ's March 23 issue is available in the library on the Brighton and Downtown campuses.)

  • Food Management magazine recently published an article on SUNY's food insecurity efforts, with MCC's efforts highlighted. (See attached file.) President Kress, who co-chairs the SUNY's Food Insecurity Task Force, was interviewed for the article. She shared details of the task force and some of its target goals. She underscored the critical need to help students "who aren't completing their degrees or earning their certificates--not for lack of motivation--but for lack of having their basic needs met."

Footnote: An amazing team of MCC members was involved in creating the concept of DWIGHT to reduce the stigma of food insecurity and encourage more individuals to seek help. Tremendous credit goes to:
