Poetry Reading Events Featuring MCC Professor and Author, Dr. Elizabeth Johnston

Consider attending the Thursday evening book launch and reading of Veils, Halos and Shackles: International Poetry on the Oppression and Empowerment of Women where Elizabeth Johnston will read from her poetry published in this anthology. This event is free and open to the public.

We would also like to encourage faculty to offer extra credit to their classes to attend either of the workshops/readings for students that will focus on Human Rights and Creative expression at Damon and Brighton during the day, with Editor Charles Fishman.

BACKGROUND
The December 2012 rape and murder of Jyoti Singh Pandey in Delhi moved thousands of people to pour into the streets in protest.

Veils, Halos & Shackles: International Poetry on the Oppression and Empowerment of Women was conceived in response to that vicious gang-rape and to the unprecedented public activism for women’s safety that followed it.

The anthology features more than 250 poems by writers from over two dozen countries, including poems from MCC professor and author, Elizabeth Johnston, as well as testimony that is wise, direct, and haunting.

This anthology will be an essential and timely contribution to the cause that so deeply concerns our society today: telling the truth about the violence and oppression women are subjected to, and moving individuals, and even governments, to protect and support women through intelligent laws and the transformation of cultures.

It’s clear that Veils, Halos & Shackles: International Poetry on the Oppression and Empowerment of Women will speak to a global audience and that, tragically, its subject will remain current in the foreseeable future.
