Wednesday Message

MCC is one of a handful of colleges that has been asked by the White House to partner in First Lady Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative. Reach Higher encourages students to attend and graduate from college, with a special focus on low income, first generation, and underrepresented students. The initiative recognizes that applying for college is a great first step and should be celebrated: creating and supporting a college-going culture is key in inspiring students both to complete high school and keep that momentum into their first year of higher education.

This step is the beginning of the journey though, not the end. Reach Higher also focuses on students’ need to understand the financial aid process and the connection between their college choices and career options. It promotes planning for college success, including taking advantage of summer learning opportunities. In other words, the initiative directly aligns with the work we do each day to increase the number of our Tribune students who become Tribune alumni.

As part of our participation in Reach Higher on May 1, MCC wants to message that local high school graduates can access an affordable, world class college education right here at home. The day offers a wonderful opportunity to strengthen our connection to area high schools. We will also use the excitement and energy generated on site and in social media to remind current students to continue on their successful journeys by registering for summer/fall 2015. After all, one of the central factors in college completion is continuous enrollment: it’s not just reaching higher but also reaching higher consistently.

On May 1, just weeks before we celebrate the graduation of over 2,600 new Tribune alumni, let’s celebrate Tribune pride by wearing black and gold. We can inspire our students and community to Reach Higher!
