Philosophy Terms in ASL Now Available on Website

In the entire world, there are only two Professional Deaf Philosophers.  A big part of the reason why we do not have more Deaf Philosophers is because there is no formal sign system in place to communicate in ASL (or any sign language).  For years, Deaf and hard of hearing students who are enrolled in Philosophy courses struggled to understand the concepts in large part because there was no commonly used signs to discuss philosophy.

That has now all changed.

Rita Straubhaar, Associate Professor of ASL in the World Languages and Cultures Department has been actively involved in an Translation Team to understand and then develop linguistically correct philosophy signs. This website is still work in progress, so if you don’t see something there or would like to add suggestions for which terms should have additional expansions, please contact Rita Straubhaar at <mailto:Rstraubhaar@monroecc.edu>.
