Lasch Promotes ATC Programs, Event on Radio Show

Beth Adams interviewed Bob Lasch, coordinator of MCC's Precision Tooling and Machining Program, on her “Rally ‘Round Rochester” radio show this past Sunday, March 20. The conversation focused on the increased manufacturing job opportunities in the Greater Rochester area as companies in the industry are seeing contract work flowing in again.

Bob described MCC’s precision machining and optical fabrication certificate and degree programs, the skills students need to succeed academically and in the manufacturing workforce, and the salary ranges in these fields. He also promoted the Monroe Manufactures Jobs initiative (an MCC-county-industry collaboration) and the High-Tech Expo coming on March 30 on the Brighton Campus.

In response to a question about how much emphasis high schools place on vocational education such as offering shop classes, Bob points to a couple of key findings in the Pathways to Prosperity: Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Young Americans for the 21st Century report https://www.gse.harvard.edu/news_events/features/2011/Pathways_to_Prosperity_Feb2011.pdf". Published in February by the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Pathways to Prosperity Project, the report offers a vision that provides more options for young people to build upon their natural abilities, interests, and skills in an applied learning setting.

Joining the conversation was Kevin Kelley, executive director of the Rochester Tooling and Machining Association. He described the health of the manufacturing industry, what some of these companies in the Rochester region do and how employers are working collaboratively to bring more work to the region.
