Passing of Dr. Gennarino, Professor Emerita

It is with great sympathy that I inform you of the passing of Elizabeth B. Gennarino, Ed.D., MCC professor emerita.

Betty’s compassion for and interest in student achievement made her a symbol of the college mission during her tenure here at MCC. She loved our students, and always kept their interest foremost in her mind, always asking “Is this best for our students?” She and her husband, Ralph, former vice president of administration at SUNY Brockport, consistently attended student programs on our campus. Betty also was known for her rapport with faculty, SUNY and State Education Department officials. Junior faculty and less experienced administrators often sought her advice, and she readily offered direction and guidance.

Betty started work at MCC in September of 1963 as an assistant professor in English (reading). She was promoted to associate professor in 1967 and professor a year later. She was named dean of curriculum in 1973, and in 1980, she retired and was awarded the rank of professor emerita.

She received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 1978, having served on and chaired numerous committees including a task force on health education and a science teachers workshop. Serving her profession, she was a member of the American Association of Higher Education, American Association of Community and Junior Colleges, and National Collegiate Honors Council.

Prior to joining MCC, she was an elementary school principal in southeastern New York. She earned her Ed.D. from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1971, M.A. from New York University in 1959, and B.Ed. from SUNY Oneonta.

She and Ralph had lived in Brockport before moving to the Jamestown area. Betty passed away on Nov. 8. Memorials may be made to Brockport Foundation, 350 New Campus Drive, SUNY Brockport, Brockport, NY 14420.
