TV Station Reports on College-Readiness Initiative

In its Thursday evening broadcast, 13WHAM News reported on the Community Center for Teaching Excellence (CCTE) and the new teaching techniques some of the Fellows are implementing in their classrooms this fall.

They interviewed Ann Pennella, director of CCTE, which is housed on MCC's Brighton Campus, as well as Samuel Simpson, math teacher at All City High School.

Twenty-four teachers from area high schools and MCC are implementing new teaching methods in their classrooms this fall to address barriers to college readiness and completion and to bridge the divide between K-12 and higher education.

For example, a few teachers are co-creating common assignments and assessments on student learning for their high school and college English writing classes while several others are developing interactive videos and incorporating other 21st-century tools to increase participation in their math classes.

The teachers are the first Fellows in the pioneering CCTE, aimed at establishing a regional knowledge base for improving student success across the K-20 continuum. Partners in this initiative include Rochester City School District, Rush-Henrietta Central School District, The College at Brockport, SUNY Geneseo, and St. John Fisher College.
