Announcement: New Shared Advising Model

The Top FOUR Things You Need to Know About the New Shared Advising Plan

1. The plan is truly SHARED!

-This plan is the culmination of years of conversations and work by many people in the college community.

-It has had significant input from various constituencies.

-The model is supported by VP Holmes, Provost Wade, and VP Oldham.

-Academic Services, EDIWS, and Student Services share the responsibility for advising students.

2. The model is flexible enough to allow it to change and grow as we employ it.

-As with anything new that we implement, we will not know how well it works until we try it. The plan will be assessed and we will be seeking feedback and making changes as necessary.

3. Students will be advised at their point of contact —- each student should leave that first contact with a “soft” schedule.

-Students who have assigned advisors in their programs will continue to seek advisement as they always have.

-Students who arrive at the Advisement Center will be advised there.

-Students who arrive in departments seeking department-specific advisement will be advised there.

-If a Professional Advisor or Faculty Advisor working with a student at that first point of contact does not feel that he or she is an expert in a specific area (Financial Aid, Program courses), a soft schedule or course list will be provided. If additional expertise is necessary, the advisor will provide a referral to an individual or office that can provide that information to the student.

4. The shared advising plan follows the principles of the guided pathways model.

-Advising will always follow a student’s pathway.

-Students will all be assisted in creating a course plan for their pathway.
