Scholars' Day and Visiting Scholar Margot Lee Shetterly

MCC’s annual Scholars' Day Conference will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2017.   This year's events include two keynote addresses, on both the Damon City Campus and Brighton Campus. The Scholars' Day Conference Keynote will be given on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, by Margot Lee Shetterley, author of Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race Tickets are available at <http://www.monroecctickets.com> .

Margot Lee Shetterly grew up in Hampton, Virginia, where she knew many of the women in her book Hidden Figures. She is an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow and the recipient of a Virginia Foundation for the Humanities grant for her research on women in computing.

Information about Scholars' Day and our invited speakers will be available at the Scholars' Day website <https://web.monroecc.edu/scholarsday>. A formal call for participation will be made in the coming weeks, with a submission deadline in late February.

Meanwhile, we encourage faculty and staff to support and promote submissions from their talented and interested students.  Faculty are especially encouraged to include opportunities in their course curricula that may generate student projects for Scholars' Day presentations.  Participating students need a faculty sponsor, but the presentation does not have to originate in conjunction with a specific class.  Faculty research or other productions are also welcome.

The purpose of Scholars' Day is to showcase work of the college's students and faculty.  Members from every discipline are welcome to submit proposals. Presentations may take many forms, including traditional presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions, demonstrations, performances, recitals, etc.

Awards for outstanding student presentations will also be given in the form of Scholarships.

We hope you will take part in this year's celebration of academic achievement.
