President's Wednesday Message

Each fall, our student leaders hold a team-building retreat and invite me to speak with them on their first night of camp.  I speak a bit about my journey through college and along the very winding path that led me to MCC. Then, I invite them to ask me questions about anything--no topic is off limits, and they always make the most of this open invitation.  The diversity of our student leaders is powerful and remarkable: the experiences they bring, the journeys they have traveled make MCC a stronger and richer college. This year, in particular, their diversity came through in their questions; among other topics, our students asked about gender inclusive housing, perceived biases in classroom interactions, and how to increase financial support.  Significantly, in every case, it was clear they were speaking out with a goal of making MCC a more welcoming and effective learning environment.  Our students were reflecting our College community's shared values and putting into play the lessons we hope they will take with them from MCC into their lives well after they graduate.

Recently, SUNY passed one of the nation's most expansive policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Among those who helped craft the policy is our new Damon City Campus Executive Dean, Dr. Joel Frater. I encourage you to
read the full document, but the essence of the policy is expressed in its first principle:  "Diversity and inclusiveness are integral components of the highest quality academic programs and the strongest campus climate. Diversity is essential to excellence in the university setting." This principle captures MCC's longstanding values, and on Friday night, it threaded through our students' comments and questions.

The new academic year will bring many organized opportunities to celebrate the diversity of MCC and learn more about students whose stories and journeys may be different than our own.  Such activities are significant, but much more important are the many ways, every day, in which you make our students feel welcomed. Inclusion isn't an abstract concept at MCC; it is the foundation that creates an environment in which all of our students can reach for excellence.  You are central to building this foundation. Thank you.
