(June 21, 2006) — Monroe Community College on Tuesday was awarded the Pepsi/NATYCAA trophy as the top junior college athletic program in the nation.

It is the first time MCC, winner of four national championships this school year, has won the award, given by the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators.

"This is a fantastic accomplishment,'' MCC Athletic Director Murph Shapiro said by telephone from New Orleans.

"I don't know if people realize how tough it is to win this award," he said. "You can be a great coach and go a lifetime without winning a national championship but we won four this year.''

MCC won three national women's championships — soccer, basketball and softball — and recently added a fourth in men's golf.

In addition to a $2,500 check from Pepsi, Shapiro will bring home a two-foot, pyramid-style trophy.

"It's a monster trophy," said Shapiro. "I'd get a hernia if I tried to carry it around."
