AmeriCorps to Participate in Humanities Discussion Project, "The Meaning of Service"

Rochester AmeriCorps has been selected as the only program in NYS to participate in an exciting project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This year's 33 AmeriCorps members will participate in a series of seven sessions focused on exploring the meaning of service through small group discussion of elected readings.

"The Civically Engaged Reader," just published by the Great Books Foundation, provides nearly 50 text selections centered on four topics: associating, serving, giving, and leading. Sessions will be co-facilitated by Marilyn Rosche, AmeriCorps director, and Shane Butterfield, a Ph.D. candidate in American history at the University of Rochester. A project of the Illinois Council for the Humanities, "The Meaning of Service" is now operating in AmeriCorps programs in ten states. Local staff are already looking at ways to make the program available to interested groups at MCC and in the community.
