Monshipour Presents in Canada

Shahin Monshipour, assistant professor, sociology, in the Anthropology, Sociology, History and Political Science Department, made two presentations at two universities in Montreal Canada last week. On March 6, Monshipour gave a lecture to a group of 45 students from the department of Anthropology at McGill University.  The topic was Recent Ethnography on Bakhtiari Nomads of Iran.

The following day, Monshipour presented her video documentary on Bakhtiari Women of Iran to an audience of 300 at the University of Quebec at Montreal.  This was part of an event in celebration of Women's Day held by several departments at the UQAM.  The Iranian Women's Association of Quebec was also one of the sponsors who arranged a staging of a special dance , choreographed and performed by a group of 14 performers, based on Bakhtiari women's hand and body movements in the art of hand-knotting carpets. Professors Monshipour and Aram Bayat (of McGill university) had worked together creatively for many months in 2006-2007, on producing this dance performance which was staged for the first time here at MCC in the spring of 2007.

Monshipour hopes to continue her research and ethnography of Bakhtiaries in Iran this summer.
