Jobs/Training in Tooling & Machining

MCC's tooling and machining program at the Applied Technologies Center got a great boost Tuesday when the county held a news conference and was joined by local political leaders and representatives from the Rochester Tooling and Machining Association, state Department of Labor, and business owners.

They were all at the Applied Tech on West Henrietta Road to say that high-tech jobs ARE available in Rochester. In fact, each student in MCC's program entertains up to five job offers after graduation. And business leaders say hundreds of vacancies still exist. With media focus on large-company layoffs, fewer people have enrolled in MCC's program - dropping from 274 enrolled a decade ago to 112 who entered the program last year.

Tuesday's message: space is available at MCC and local job opportunities do exist.

From MCC, President Flynn offered remarks, instructor Darwin Snow led a precision tooling demonstration, and on hand to answer questions were James Winston, assistant to the president for Workforce Development, and Bob Lasch, tooling and machining program coordinator.

The event received much positive media attention, running on the local TV networks at noon and 5 pm and in the Rochester Business Journal's online edition.

Thank you to all who participated and assisted in the event.
