MCC Finishes Second in Race for NATYCAA Cup

The Monroe Community College athletic program capped a tremendous year with another high finish in the race for the NATYCAA Cup.

The Tribunes tied for second place, finishing runner-up for the third straight year.  MCC accumulated 143 total points, 15.5 points behind two-time winner Iowa Central Community College.  Cowley College also scored 143.

The NATYCAA Awards are given to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges based on success in championship competition at the national level. The Tribunes, who are in the NJCAA Scholarship Division, won the Cup in 2006 and 2007.

Skip Bailey, athletic director, represented MCC at an awards ceremony in Anaheim, Cal. June 21-22.
"This is a tremendous accomplishment," Bailey said.  "This is a tribute to the quality of the student-athletes who our coaches are recruiting, the outstanding job of coaching done by the staff, and the continued commitment by Monroe Community College to quality athletics."

In the scoring system used to determine the champion, a school may use its five highest finishes in national tournaments or polls in both men’s and women’s sports to compile a total score. Points are assigned to the place of finish beginning with 20 for a national championship, 19 for second and so on.

MCC captured two national championships during the year. The golf team won its second consecutive title, while the women's lacrosse team won for the first time in program history.

The softball team placed second after reaching the NJCAA national championship game.  The ice hockey team reached the national semifinals, and the women's and men's swimming and diving clubs were fourth and fifth, respectively.

MCC's women's basketball team placed fifth, while the men's hoops squad was a national participant as well.
This is the seventh year of the NATYCAA Awards Program.  The National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators is the national professional organization of all two-year college athletic administrators from throughout the United States.
