Passing of Retiree Bruce Brown, Visual and Performing Arts Department

I am sad to inform the college community that Bruce R. Brown, retired associate professor of art, passed away on June 8, 2014, in the Philippines.

Bruce began his MCC career in 1968 as assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 1976. He was dedicated to his profession as teacher and artist, to his students, and to the art department, serving as acting chair in 1979 and as adviser to the Student Art Association.

During his tenure at MCC, he and his students enhanced the Brighton Campus environment with their paintings and sculptures. Highly regarded for his creativity and craftsmanship, he was often asked to design and create special pieces for MCC presidents, including a medallion for the inauguration of Dr. Moses S. Koch; a bronze plaque of Dr. Samuel J. Stabins for the dedication of the physical education complex; and a medallion for Dr. Peter A. Spina. Bruce also designed and oversaw the production of the student academic achievement medallion in 1977.

In 1991-92, as MCC prepared to open the Damon City Center (later renamed the Damon City Campus), Bruce developed courses ranging from sculpture to mural painting for the new location.

While he was devoted to MCC, Bruce was also active in the arts community in the Rochester region and beyond. He directed construction of playground sculpture for a Rochester-area children’s hospital in 1973, frequently served as judge in art shows, and exhibited his work nationally and internationally.

Bruce retired from MCC in 1999.

Information on his family and memorial arrangements was not provided.
