Democrat and Chronicle: MCC's excellence helps us all

From the editorial page of the Monday, June 26 Democrat and Chronicle:

MCC's excellence helps us all

It's a big reason why this is an exceptional community

(June 26, 2006) — That was quite an honor last week when Monroe Community College was awarded the Pepsi/NATYCAA trophy, further evidence that the school is, all around, one of the top community colleges in the nation.

After winning an unprecedented four national championships this year, MCC was awarded the trophy by the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators in New Orleans. MCC recently was crowned national champion in men's golf. In recent months, the school won three national women's championships in soccer, basketball and softball.

MCC Athletic Director Murph Shapiro puts this all in perspective: "You can be a great coach and go a lifetime without winning a national championship, but we won four this year."

How impressive is that!

MCC's athletic program credentials go hand in hand with the school's stature as a leading academic institution. It's ranked 7th, for example, among the nation's top 10 community colleges in the Top Associate Degree Producers 2006 report. Take, too, that 62 percent of MCC's Class of 2005 graduates who transferred to other colleges chose local schools. Most picked the State University College at Brockport and Rochester Institute of Technology. And get this: Eighty-nine percent of MCC's career and certificate program graduates are full-time local employees.

Clearly, MCC excellence is a community asset that all living here should appreciate.

Congratulations to everyone who contributes to the excellence of MCC!
