Science Bowl Media Coverage

A team from MCC's STEP program tied for third place with Iglesia Educational Center - NSBE Jr. Program in Rochester during the Rochester regional championship of the U.S. Department of Energy's National Science Bowl® for high school students. The event was held Saturday at the Damon City Campus.

Teams from the University of Buffalo Biomedical STEP Program took first and second place. Various media locally (including WROC-TV 8 and News10NBC) and newspapers across the state covered the MCC STEP-sponsored event. 16 teams from Rochester, Buffalo, Fredonia and Schenectady competed in the Jeopardy-style format. The event also included a Native American friendship dance, an awards ceremony and speakers. Many thanks go to Donna Augustine, who organized the science bowl, for coordinating her hectic schedule with media.

Here's an article in Friday's Democrat and Chronicle.

Science Bowl at Damon campus Saturday

(February 1, 2007) — Close to 100 high school students from across the state will converge Saturday on Monroe Community College’s Damon City Campus for a regional U.S. Energy Department Science Bowl.

Many of the students will come from the state Science & Technology Entry Program, which was created to offer particular academic assistance for minority youths, who are traditionally underrepresented in math, science and technology fields.

The winning team will receive an invitation to take part in the Energy Department’s National Science Bowl, which will be April 26-30 in Washington D.C.

Alongside the bowl, various events will mark the 20th anniversary of the state Entry Program and the accompanying state Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program. For example, NASA aerospace engineer Jeremy W. John will give a talk. John was one of New York’s first participants in the Science & Technology Entry Program.
