AmeriCorps Program Honored by Governor Pataki

Rochester AmeriCorps received special recognition from Governor George E. Pataki this week as a 2004 Dr. King Community Service Organization honoree. The program received its award at the closing plenary of the New York State Governor’s Dr. King Leadership Symposium on School Violence Prevention in Albany on Thursday, April 29.

Roger Biagi, executive deputy commissioner of the NYS Office of Children & Families, presented the award to program director Marilyn Rosché and AmeriCorps member Hussain Ahmed.

In comments by Joiel Ray-Alexander, SUNY assistant vice chancellor for Enrollment Programs and School-College Relations, the program was praised for its focus on public safety issues and its emphasis on children and youth.

Members of Rochester AmeriCorps are placed in a variety of local organizations on a full-time basis for a one-year term of service. Their work focuses on expanding and enhancing public safety and youth development services. Projects include school safety and tutoring initiatives, teen leadership councils, technology instruction, conflict resolution and violence prevention training, and structured recreational activities.

Members receive a modest living allowance while in the program. At the end of their term of service, they are issued an education award of $4,725.

The program is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and is currently recruiting 80 members for enrollment in September.
