MCC Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusion in the Wake of Rutgers' Tragedy

In light of the recent highly publicized incidents of bullying, harassment, and suicides of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) college students,  I wish to affirm Monroe Community College’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness.  As our statement on diversity reads, “We maintain that valuing differences can teach us more about ourselves as human beings and provide us with creative energy that comes when we learn from each other.”

As part of our commitment to diversity, MCC has developed a training program called “Safe Zone:  Improving the Climate for LGBT Community Members.”  Four training sessions have been offered over the past two years, with over 100  faculty, staff and students participating in the training.  Look for the Safe Zone sticker to identify those who have received the training and are willing to be a supportive ally to LGBT students, faculty and staff.

We wish to emphasize that MCC will not tolerate harassment of any community members. Individuals should report harassment or threatening statements and behaviors to Public Safety.

We also wish to make LGBT students, faculty and staff aware of resources and services available.  Students can seek counseling services at the Counseling and Advising Center on the Brighton Campus, and at the Student Services Center on the Damon City Campus.  Employees can seek assistance through the Employee Assistance Program at 1-800-451-3281.

Finally, the Brighton Campus Student Governance Association is sponsoring National Coming Out Day on October 11.  We encourage the participation of the entire community in this event. Let us join together to show our support of diversity and inclusion.  Look for more information in the MCC Daily Tribune and the Student Tribune.
