You Are Invited to Celebrate with Dean Kate Smith

The college community is cordially invited to a celebration with Kate Smith.  Kate has accepted the position of vice president of academic affairs at Rio Salado College in Phoenix, Arizona.

For more than 20 years, the overarching theme of Kate’s work at MCC has been to create.  As the Coordinator of Teacher Preparation, Kate was instrumental in the creation of MCC’s Education Department, developing degree proposals and building the foundation for that program.  Later as the first Education Department chairperson Kate created K-12 partnerships to support student field placements allowing students to have classroom experiences early in their academic program.  Most recently as dean of Academic Foundations, Kate has spearheaded the MCC Academies model, which creates guided pathways and MCC systems that support and facilitate student success.  Kate’s work is known on multiple campuses, through numerous committees, throughout MCC and in the larger community.

Not to be overlooked is the work Kate accomplished in the classroom.  As a professor in the Transitional Studies Department Kate worked to provide opportunity and success to the students in her classes.  Students still speak of her teaching style as if she were a legend.

It is this spirit of dedication to MCC and commitment to serving students with excellence that we invite you to share in celebrating.  Please join us Thursday, April 7 from 1:30– 3:30 p.m. in the Brighton Campus Spina Administration Building Board Room (1-325) and Board Lounge (1-320) to thank Kate for her service to MCC and wish her success in her new endeavor.  Anyone who would like to contribute toward a gift can contact Sue O’Brien <mailto:sobrien@monroecc.edu>  or Debbie Ake in 11-261 or Tricia Storms in 8-332 by April 5.
