STEP Students Present Their Research Projects

Five students in the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) at MCC had the opportunity to present their research posters at the Rochester Academy Charter School Research Symposium. Held on Wednesday, October 12, the research symposium allowed participants to share their unique experiences with fellow students, teachers, administrators, staff and community members.  Student presenters were able to share their research project through a poster session.  They also had the opportunity to answer questions regarding their personal experience and growth at their respective research laboratories.

Essence Hagan conducted research this past summer at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The title of her research was "Lung Tumor motion with and without abdominal compression in the Management of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Tumors Using Sterotactic Body Radiation Therapy."The remaining students did their research at SUNY Oswego.  Willie Brooks'  and Ngoma Gabian's research title was "Binder-Free and Carbon-Free Lithium Nanoparticles Batteries."  Terrell Brooks and Elijah Hardaway’s research topic was "Synthesis and Metal-ion Uptake Properties of a New Dithiocarbamate-base Resin."  Tyresseus Hunter project was a combination of biology and computer science that studied the effects of oxygen on the growth of vertebrates.

At the Research Symposium, the students shared that, in addition to acquiring scientific knowledge and laboratory skills, their research experiences also helped them gain a greater appreciation for research as a means to help society.  As current seniors at their schools, these students have become a voice encouraging their peers to participate in scientific research experiences.
