Men's basketball finishes second, women seventh at nationals

The MCC men's basketball team earned its highest-ever finish at the NJCAA Division II national tournament over the weekend, falling to Mott CC in the title game to finish as runner-up.

Monroe lost 75-61 to Mott at Danville Area CC Saturday night to finish 30-4 on the season. The Bears led 11-8 early in the game before going on a 13-0 run to extend the lead to 16 points near the midway point of the first half.  MCC was able to cut into the Mott lead and trailed 39-27 at the half.

The Tribunes scored the first two baskets after the break to cut the advantage to eight points, but Mott was resilient. Led by tournament MVP Kevin Tiggs, the Bears always had an answer to MCC's runs.

The lead was down to eight at 62-54 with 5:30 to play after a lay up by Vince Mosley and a free throw by Joe Lindsey. But Mott (35-3) answered with a quick 6-0 burst and hit 9-of-10 free throws over the last three and a half minutes to seal the victory.

Chris Rogers had a big game off the bench for the Tribunes, scoring a team-high 15 points.  Jonathan Moore added 11, while Kevin Draughon had 10.  Moore and Lindsey represented MCC on the All-Tournament team.

The MCC women finished as consolation champions at the NJCAA Division I tournament, falling in their first game before winning three straight.

The Lady Tribunes lost to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in the opening round.  Monroe then came back to defeat Georgia Perimeter, Jefferson College, and Tyler Junior College to finish the season with a record of 30-3.
