Horizons Program Attracts Local Media Interest

Newspapers and TV stations recently reported on how 30 kindergarteners and first-graders from the Rochester City School District are benefiting from the Horizons summer enrichment program at MCC. The media interviewed Clayton Jones, assistant to the vice president of academic services; Rachel Mutter-Leonard, one of the program's teachers; Linda Judd, a STEM specialist; and several Horizons children.

The MCC program is an affiliate of the nonprofit Horizons National, whose learning model has garnered national recognition and local support. Data show that Horizons students gain an average of three months of reading and math skills each summer and are far more likely to later graduate from high school and attend college than other children. In support of MCC’s efforts to close the achievement gap and thereby strengthen the educational pipeline in Rochester, the Max and Marian Farash Charitable Foundation and the Rochester City School District recently awarded more than $76,000 in grants to MCC’s program.

With help from The Harley School’s established Horizons program, MCC’s program served its first cohort of 10 kindergarteners in 2011. This summer, the program is housed in Building 19 on the Brighton Campus. The expectation is for the cohorts to return summer after summer as additional clusters of kindergarteners enter the program annually. Ultimately, the program will expand to Grade 8, serving up to 135 students.

MCC’s tuition-free, full-day summer program began June 26 and goes through Aug. 3.
