Winter sports ready to return to action

Monroe Community College's winter sports teams are ready to kick off the new semester, and the action will begin in earnest on Jan. 7 as the men's and women's basketball teams host a home doubleheader.

Mercyhurst Northeast will come to town for a twinbill on the hard court as the teams kick off Western New York Athletic Conference play. The women will start things off at 1 p.m. with the men immediately after.

The Tribune men are currently 11-3 on the season and are ranked 10th in the NJCAA Division II poll. They have been off since Dec. 17, a resounding 93-74 home win over Cuyahoga CC.  The women's team is 9-1 and is ranked eighth in the Division I poll. They have been off since Dec. 11, a 30-point victory over Mott CC.

The hockey team will resume play on Jan. 11 with the first of three consecutive home games at the ESL Sports Centre.  The Tribunes will take a 7-4-1 record into that game with Niagara.  MCC will then host Wheatfield on Jan. 15 and Erie CC on Jan. 18.

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams are currently training in Florida.  They will travel to Buffalo for the ECC Invitational on Jan. 21 before returning home for a meet on Jan. 25.  MCC will also host the Region III championships Feb. 10-12.
