Former Tribune Brownsten drafted by Atlanta Braves

Former Monroe Tribune Cory Brownsten was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 15th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball draft Tuesday.

A 6-1, 205-pound catcher, Brownsten spent the last two seasons at the University of Pittsburgh.  The 2008 MCC grad had a stellar senior season, batting .395 with three home runs and 46 runs batted in.

Brownsten finished the year with a .993 fielding percentage for the Panthers and was named to the all tournament team at the Big East Championship after hitting .417 in three games.

Brownsten helped lead MCC to two straight appearances at the NJCAA Division II World Series.  During his sophomore season he batted .390 with seven home runs and 50 runs batted in as the Tribunes finished third in the nation.  He was a first team All-American selection and was named the national Defensive Player of the Year.

His two-year totals at MCC included a .368 batting average, 10 homers, and 68 runs batted in.
