Fess & Palmer Participate in Health Information Technology Scholars Program

On February 23rd-25th, Assistant Professor Shelley Fess and Professor Laurie Palmer traveled to Kansas City Missouri to participate in the National League of Nursing’s Health Information Technology (HITS) Scholars Program. The HITS program is grant funded through The Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA’s) Bureau of Health Professions (BHPr) in partnership with the Office of Health Information Technology (OHIT). The program is designed to provide scholars an opportunity to envision the future of healthcare delivery in order to design, implement, evaluate and disseminate innovative educational strategies that will prepare graduates for contemporary practice in an information rich and complex healthcare environment. Following submission of their project and with the support of the division dean, Laurel Sanger, the nursing department’s chair, Cheryl Mahoney, and fellow nursing faculty, Fess and Palmer were able to secure a spot in the last cohort of this highly competitive program (in which only 265 of 1,766 applicants were accepted).

The three day workshop included field trips to technology rich environments and provided an opportunity for project consulting with simulation and informatics nurse leaders from the University of Kansas, the University of Colorado Denver, Johns Hopkins University, and Indiana University. Fess and Palmer had the opportunity to network with 58 faculty from diverse academic settings who are enthusiastic about integrating health information and other technologies in their curriculum. In addition they received, and will continue to receive for one year, feedback and consultation regarding their project which seeks to incorporate health information technology into simulation.
