President's Wednesday Message
The coming of Memorial Day marks the start of the summer reading season. Much like my plate at a buffet, my book list is always too full and piles many unrelated items right on top of each other. So, in this spirit, here's what I'll be trying to read while the days are long:
Nonfiction
Janesville, Amy Goldstein
Who Thought This Was a Good Idea?, Alyssa Mastromonaco
Fiction
Chemistry, Weike Wang
House of Names, Colm Toibin
Saints for All Occasions, J. Courtney Sullivan
The Chalk Artist, Allegra Goodman
The Odyssey, Homer (Robert Fagels translation)
What is Not Yours Is Not Yours, Helen Oyeyemi
Poetry
So Much Synth, Brenda Shaughnessy
The list includes favorite authors with new books (or in the case of Oyeyemi, a 2016 release I never got to read), a debut novel, a collection of poetry, both fun and substantial nonfiction, and a reread. My only disappointment in the list is that Robin Sloan's new novel, Sourdough, got kicked to a fall release, as it would have been a great summer read. Still, this literary picnic has me excited for golden, warm evenings spent turning pages.
What is on your summer must-read list? Share recommendations with others on the blog.
