MCC Agreement Expands Child Care Services

Under an agreement with Rochester City School District, the Guon Child Care Center at MCC will offer free, full-day expanded pre-K (EPK) and universal pre-K (UPK) programs for up to 30 city of Rochester children beginning in fall 2018.

The new partnership provides MCC student parents with more opportunities to enroll their children in a free, high-quality early childhood program on the Brighton Campus. The partnership also increases the likelihood of student parents persisting to graduation and enhances the child care center's efforts in providing early care and learning to young children so they are more likely to be school ready by age 5.

The agreement with RCSD creates 14 full-day slots for 3-year-olds in EPK and 16 full-day slots for 4-year-olds in UPK. The full day is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday with wrap-around care available for a fee.

Families must be Rochester city residents to apply for a spot in the new programs. Parents do not have to attend MCC to participate.

Applications for EPK are processed through a lottery system. To be eligible for EPK, children must meet one of the following requirements: qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, receive special education services, or their primary home language is not English. Placement in the UPK program is on a first-come, first-served basis. All enrollment is being done at the Guon Child Care Center.

The center offers early childhood care and education for children 2 months to 5 years. It is licensed to serve 96 children.

The 10-month agreement with RCSD runs through June 2019, with an option to renew for up to four additional one-year terms and contingent upon state renewal of grant funding.

If you have questions about the programs, contact Anne Barker, director of the Guon Child Care Center, or Tiffany VanAuker, assistant director, at (585) 292-2640.
