Channel 8 Features Single Stop at MCC Program

News 8 (WROC) interviewed director Peggy Harvey-Lee and student Terence Durham about the Single Stop at MCC program.

Now in its second year, the program is showing evidence of success in helping disadvantaged students stay in college--and ultimately graduate--by removing financial and personal barriers.

As its name implies, Single Stop at MCC < https://www.monroecc.edu/go/singlestop/> allows students and their families to access a range of free and low-cost community resources and wraparound services through a single office, ensuring that students become aware of the many resources available throughout Greater Rochester to support them.

Since 2016, the program at MCC has received 253 applications from students seeking access to an array of social, financial and legal services. Of the recipients who were served in the 2016-17 academic year, an average 67.4 percent completed one semester and returned to MCC the following semester, according to the latest data. The average persistence rate for MCC overall during the same period is 65 percent.

Peggy, who oversees the program, told Channel 8:

"Students do not leave school necessarily because of academics but they leave because of life situations and challenges. We want to make sure that our students persist and graduate -- that they become contributing members of society, and earn a good living and can help their families."

Terence, a human services major, spoke about how he benefited from the program:
