Dr. Lawrence Dugan Presents at SUNY Chief Financial Officers Meeting

Dr. Lawrence Dugan, Director of Elearning and Instructional Technology at MCC, presented at the annual meeting of the SUNY Chief Financial Officers in June. The topic of the presentation was on the importance of early alert systems and what it takes to realize a return on investment of the products. SUNY recently adopted Starfish as a SUNY-wide initiative as part of the SUNY completion agenda. Dugan reinforced the idea that it isn't necessarily software that helps students succeed; it is the relationship that the student has with individuals at the college that makes the most difference. Using tools such as Starfish helps facilitate that relationship and engage students with different areas of the college that can provide support. "If we don't know the problems students are having, there is little we can do as an institution to make the recommendations that will help the students succeed." Finding these issues early in the semester helps students connect with resources necessary to stay ahead of the workload that might come later in the semester.
