Affinity Groups Present: VOICES Lecture Series Professional Development

Please join the African American Affinity Group, The Latino Empowerment Network (LEN), and the LGBTQ Affinity Group for our collaborative VOICES Series.

VOICES is a Scholar Presentation Series derived from the African American Affinity Group. Its purpose is to showcase both Affinity Group members in their areas of expertise as well as local area scholars within other institutions.

As a part of Professional Development Week, the Affinity Groups have collaborated our efforts to bring you two amazing lectures:

June 6, 2017 (Forum Room - Brighton Campus)

Session 1 - 9am- 10:30am

Presenter: Tokeya C. Graham - Assistant Professor - English Department (AAAG)

Title of Presentation: I am Not Your Mama, Do Your Work: The Plight of the Black Female Academic as Surrogate Mother

Detailed Description of Presentation: This presentation offers to highlight the experiences of Black women academics in Higher Education who are often positioned as the help in regards to student's interactions. Specifically, I will complicate the unspoken expectations of Black women's bodies/lives/selves against the backdrop of PWI institutions.

Presentation Objective(s): The objective is to amplify the voices of Black women faculty and staff in Higher Education and provide a platform for their experiences.

Session 2 - 10:30am -Noon

Presenter: Jessica Wilkie

Title: In(di)visible, With Liberty and Justice For All?: The invisible history of Transgender and gender non-conforming Americans in LGBTQ rights movements.

Description: The recent airing of When We Rise on ABC, a major broadcasting network, thrust LGBTQ history into the spotlight and the American consciousness like never before. Indeed, this program corrected some of the misrepresentations of queer people in popular media and historical records, but many still remain. The most egregious errors and omissions are those that delete or hide the fierce efforts and energy of transgender and gender non-conforming persons. This presentation seeks to shed light on the often forgotten struggle of these LGBTQ Americans over the past century.

We hope to see you there!
