Men of Excellence Coming This Fall!

What is the Men of Excellence program at Monroe Community College?

The Men of Excellence program is designed to academically, professionally, and socially support male students of color by providing coaching and leadership development opportunities through collaborative initiatives. A student can apply or be nominated by a teacher, faculty, staff, or fellow student, and may participate for a maximum of two years.

Overview

The Men of Excellence program will support a variety of Monroe Community College campus and community initiatives. Students will be paired with a coach to offer guidance and support through one-on-one meetings at least twice a semester. Students will also attend specialized workshops, weekly team meetings, participate in community service projects, and attend a Men of Excellence conference in the fall.

Program Requirements

A student:

  • must attend the kick-off conference.
  • must complete one community service project.
  • must represent Men of Excellence by attending two campus-wide programs/initiatives per semester.
  • must meet with their coach at least twice per semester.
  • must attend weekly team meetings.
  • must attend specialized workshops.

Program Benefits

  • Development of leadership and communication skills
  • Opportunity to work with a team of campus leaders
  • Opportunity to build strong connections with the MCC and Rochester communities
  • Receipt of one-on-one coaching/mentoring from a faculty or staff member
  • Increased potential for certificates/scholarships

If you know a student who would be a great addition to this program, please reach out and encourage them to apply. They can apply directly online at https://www.monroecc.edu/organizations/diversity/men-of-excellence/.

Program Coaches Needed

Coaches are responsible for meeting with their mentees twice per semester. The meetings are not limited to an office setting and can be in the form of outings and activities (i.e., lunch, coffee, sporting event, community program). The meetings will serve as an opportunity to academically support and provide guidance and resources to the student. Assessment will need to be completed after every meeting.
