Passing of Professor Emerita Jeanne Ghent

I am saddened to inform the MCC community of English Professor Emerita Jeanne Kilpatrick Ghent's recent passing. Prof. Ghent began her MCC career in 1971 as an assistant professor of English. Two years later, she received the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 1978 was promoted to associate professor. In 1984, Prof. Ghent was recognized with the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award by MCC's Black Student Union and the standing committee on Blacks in Higher Education. She was promoted to the rank of professor in 1991.

Known for her commitment to students and contagious enthusiasm for literature, Jeanne was an exceptional teacher and a diligent, generous faculty member. She was faculty adviser for the Black Students' Union, an Affirmative Action Committee member and a member of the Women's Caucus. She helped develop the Alice Holloway Young graduate student teaching internship and was also active in the community, serving in both the American Red Cross and the League of Women Voters.

Prof. Ghent received her M.A. and B.A. from Hunter College. Before starting at MCC, she taught junior high school English and social studies in Brooklyn, NY and was a substitute teacher in Gates-Chili, Churchville-Chili and Spencerport high schools.

Prof. Ghent is survived by a daughter, two sons, nine grandchildren--including Marcus Blythers of MCC's Advisement and Transfer Services Office--and four great grandchildren. She was very proud that both her daughter, Elizabeth Prescod, a former MCC faculty member, and grandson Marcus were given the opportunity to contribute their talents to a place she loved so dearly.

Friends may call Friday, Feb. 2, 5:00 - 7:30 pm at the Church of the Epiphany, 3285 Buffalo Road, Rochester, NY 14624. Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Church of the Epiphany. A 10:00 am viewing will be followed by the 11:00 am funeral service.

Contributions in Jeanne's memory may be made to Shepherd Home.
