Passing of Stuart Porter, Math Retiree

I am sad to inform the College community that Stuart "Stu" Porter, a retired math professor and scholarship benefactor, passed away on October 16.

Stuart began his MCC career in 1963 as assistant professor in the Mathematics Department. During his tenure, he rose through the ranks and in 1970 was promoted to professor. He retired in 1992 after 29 years of service.

He earned two degrees in math -- an M.S. from Syracuse University and a B.S. from Kutztown (Pa.) State College -- and was the co-author of two textbooks that were used at MCC, "Technical Mathematics" and "Technical Mathematics with Calculus."

Praised by his colleagues for the high caliber of work he contributed to the math discipline as an educator and writer, Stuart attributed his intellectual and professional growth to the inspiring academic atmosphere. He selflessly dedicated his time and efforts to helping students achieve their educational goals.

In 1985, he and his wife, Joyce, established a scholarship fund for math students at MCC and donated to the College all the royalties from the sale of his textbooks. Through the MCC Foundation, he also contributed funds to expand professional development opportunities for faculty.

Predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Stuart is survived by his two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brother; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2pm Saturday, October 28, at the First Presbyterian Church of Penn Yan. Memorial contributions may be made in Stuart's memory to the Stuart R. Porter and Joyce R. Porter Endowed Scholarship Fund, MCC Foundation, 1057 East Henrietta Road, Rochester, NY, 14623, or to a local Habitat of Humanity of one's choice.
