Flags to be Flown at Half-Staff: Monday, August 24, 2009

Governor David A. Paterson has directed that flags on New York State government buildings be flown at half-staff on Monday, August 24, 2009, in honor of a Marine who died in Helmand Province, Afghanistan on August 17, 2009.

Lance Corporal Leopold Damas, of Floral Park, died while supporting combat operations. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish to extend our sympathy and condolences to the friends, family and fellow Marines of Lance Corporal Damas,” said Governor Paterson. “He served his country with honor and dignity and his sacrifice on behalf of all New Yorkers and all Americans will not be forgotten.”

Governor Paterson has directed the flags on all State buildings to be lowered to half-staff in tribute to the State’s service members who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.
