Joan Moorehead, Rochester AmeriCorps recognized with Pre-Collegiate Kate Smith Marhatta Award

Congratulations to Joan Moorehead of MCC Admissions and Rochester AmeriCorps for being selected as the recipients of the 2010 Kate Smith Marhatta Award. This awardo recognizes those whose outstanding support of MCC's Pre-Collegiate programs (Upward Bound, the Liberty Partnerships Program, and STEP) has made a significant impact on the more than 300 youth that the programs serve.

Moorehead was chosen for this award for her unending support of youth and staff as they navigate the college application process. Her dedication has significantly strengthened the pipeline  that enables Pre-Collegiate Program youth to attend college. Moorehead received her award over the weekend at the 10th Anniversary Upward Bound Banquet.

Collaborations with Rochester AmeriCorps have led to an increase in the amount of services and the quality of services that the Pre-Collegiate programs offer. Currently the Pre-Collegiate programs serve as host sites for three full-time Rochester AmeriCorps volunteers. Additionally, the infectious spirit and commitment to service of Rochester AmeriCorps has led to the creation of the Pre-Collegiate Service Scholars club. In the four months since its inception, members of this club have completed more than 850 hours of service to the community.  Rochester AmeriCorps will receive their award at the STEP End-of-Year Celebration in June.

Congratulations to Joan Moorehead and Rochester AmeriCorps!

The Kate Smith Marhatta award was dedicated in 2007 in honor of Kate Smith who served as Chair of Education and as a dedicated advocate for MCC’s Pre-Collegiate programs.  Past recipients include:  Kristen Reed (Purchasing, 2008), Paul Lucas (Controller, 2009), and Debra Dwyer (Education, 2009).
