New League President and CEO Announced


Phoenix, AZ – March 3, 2006 – Henry Shannon, Chancellor of St. Louis Community College in St. Louis, Missouri, and Board Chair of the League for Innovation in the Community College, located in Phoenix, Arizona, recently announced that the League Board has selected Dr. Gerardo E. de los Santos as its new President and Chief Executive Officer.

 

Gerardo E. de los Santos previously served as Interim President and Chief Executive Officer and Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the League for Innovation.  He holds a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin’s Community College Leadership Program, and is a graduate from Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona.  During his tenure with the League for Innovation, de los Santos has helped shape the comprehensive strategic direction of the organization and has authored numerous major publications that cover a wide range of topics, including leadership development, fundraising, technology, community building, homeland security, and accelerated degree programs.

 

Shannon cited de los Santos’ extraordinary record of collaboration with both the League Board and staff, and noted his scholarly vision, enthusiasm for excellence, commitment to the community college movement, and superior operational skills.

 

Gerardo E. de los Santos expressed delight in his selection and indicated he would continue his efforts to carry on the League’s endeavor to warrant the assessment by Theodore Marchese, the veteran editor of Change,that “the League is the single most vital organization in higher education today.” He also expressed his intense interest in working in collaboration with the American Association of Community Colleges, the more than 800 League Alliance colleges, sister higher education organizations, and the League’s more than 140 corporate partners, to best position the League to serve as a catalyst, project incubator, and experimental laboratory for community colleges around the world.

 

CEOs from some of the most influential, resourceful, and dynamic community colleges and districts in the United States and Canada comprise the League’s Board of Directors.   David H. Ponitz, President Emeritus of Sinclair Community College, served as the search consultant for the League for Innovation during the six-month process.
