Security Alert: Compromised MCC Email Accounts

Unfortunately, some people have had their MCC email (username@monroecc.edu) and their bank account compromised. Users who were tricked by sophisticated email-based phishing attacks divulged their MCC credentials. Using a MCC email address as a username to a personal account and/or using the same password as your MCC password is a security risk.

Any personal accounts such as banking, email, cloud, photo-sharing etc. should be setup using a personal email account and should have a unique password. For example, when you set up online access to your bank account, use a personal email address, do not give the bank your MCC email address. The only accounts that should be linked or attached to your MCC email address are ones needed for your work at MCC.

MCC utilizes numerous technical methodologies to protect the security of college accounts. However, it is still up to you to safeguard your credentials and exercise good judgement to protect your online identities. MCC cannot be responsible for other accounts linked or attached to your MCC email. If your MCC username/password is compromised and you have attached accounts, there is the possibility that the cyber criminals can reset your password for those attached accounts making them unavailable to you. Once unavailable to you, they may be able to access your attached personal accounts for theft or mischief.

Receiving a large number of spam emails in your MCC email all at once can be a symptom of a compromised account. Malicious third parties often seek to obscure important security messages by inundating the mailbox with a flood of junk messages.

If you are receiving spam in your MCC email at an unusual rate (multiple emails within minutes of each other) call Technical Support at 292-TECH (8324), option 3. Also, check any accounts linked or attached to your MCC account. Do not use your MCC password for other accounts.
