Good Turnout at Bone Marrow Drive

A free bone marrow drive resulted in 68 people donating drops of blood to help people who have leukemia.

The event was organized by members of MCC’s Alpha Theta Iota Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Donations of blood samples cost roughly $60 a person for DNA testing to match prospective donors with patients, said Peter Boyd, president of the local PTK chapter. To ensure people would participate in the drive, the chapter organized a bowling fundraiser that brought in $2,000, including an $800 donation from the PTK chapter at Broome County Community College – so participants would not have to pay. The HLA Registry Foundation, which conducted the drive, matched funds for a total of $4,080. “We did a lot better than we expected,” Boyd said.

Thanks to all those who donated!
