Residence Halls Commons Named

Our history-making entry into residence life marked a significant milestone Monday, February 3. Amid many smiles and a few tears, the MCC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name our residence hall complex the Alice Holloway Young Commons, in honor of Trustee Chair Emerita Dr. Alice H. Young.

As many of you know, Dr. Young is a founding trustee of this college and the last founding trustee still active in the college's life. She chaired the Board of Trustees for nearly 20 years and has continued her active involvement in her years as an honorary trustee. She has been a leader and a role model for many. Dr. Young has lent her name to two significant MCC initiatives -- the Alice H. Young Teaching Internship for ethnic minorities to gain teaching experience and the Alice Holloway Young Society for individuals who have made provisions for MCC in their estate planning.

For all that she has meant to Monroe Community College, I am thrilled that we are able to honor this MCC pioneer by placing her name on our pioneering venture into residence life.

As you might expect, Dr. Young was surprised and moved by the honor. In thanking the trustees, she noted that the timing was particularly appropriate. Her father, a man committed to the education of his children but with little formal education of his own, was born on February 3, the day of the board's vote. She commented that in some ways the honor is an acknowledgement of her dad's commitment to education as well.

An appropriate dedication ceremony is being planned for July. We will keep you posted on those details.
